Biotechnology Framework
In February of 2007 the Board of Investment opened up biotechnology as a new category for investment incentive promotion, offering corporate income tax exemptions and other benefits to potential investors. This initiative should greatly contribute to the overall implementation of Thailand's National Biotechnology Framework 2004 – 2009, and the ultimate goal of ransitioning the country into a knowledge- based economy.

Biotechnology
Thailand regards biotechnology as being at the forefront of the national effort to create a knowledge driven economy that will enhance the country's competitiveness. With the strong economic growth Thailand has experienced in the past, particularly in the manufacturing sector, the focus is now shifting away from labor intensive industries and to areas where technology can be applied to add more value to the country's products and services. This is where biotechnology plays its key role.

PURAC
In late 2007 PURAC Thailand will complete the construction of its new lactic acid facility in the province of Rayong, Thailand, situated in the Map Ta Phut area of the Eastern Seaboard Industrial region. As a Netherlands company receiving promotion privileges from the Board of Investment, this company, one hundred percent owned, is the world's leading manufacturer of organic acids, with offices in Europe, South and North America, and in Asia.

Betagro
Betagro Science Center Co., Ltd provides laboratory services, including biological, chemical, pathological testing analysis, virus and serum inspection to monitor the quality of feed, animal health products and food products. Its service is open to the group's subsidiaries, and the public and private sectors.

Swiss-Thai
The Swiss-Thai Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1999 with approximately twenty members and since that time has grown to a membership of one-hundred and forty-four, including both Swiss companies that have been established and based in Thailand, and Thai companies that are based in Switzerland. There are even several members in the ranks that have no direct relationship with Switzerland, but which have joined because they appreciate the activities undertaken by the chamber, and given Switzerland's historic neutrality they are able to get a different foreign perspective on Thailand.

Promoting a knowledge based economy
Just over three years ago, the Board of Investment initiated a new incentives program for companies that contributed to developing skills, technology and innovation in the Thai workforce. Originally set to enhance Thailand's attractiveness as a site for the hi-tech industry, the STI incentive supports the nation's drive to enhance human resources and improve its international competitiveness, and aims at projects with components investing in research or design or developing Thai staff or supporting educational or research institutions. When it was adopted, the STI initiative marked a significant change in the investment incentives offered by the BOI, which were previously directed towards targeted industries, whereas STI cut across all sectors.
