Prime Minister returns to Mid-East
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, recently returned from her mission to New York where she attended the United Nations General Assembly and held several meetings with the private sector concerning Thailand’s attractiveness for investment, can now add Kuwait to her list of travels on behalf of the nation. Speaking at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) summit in Kuwait, the prime minister noted the IMF’s downward revision for world growth and stated that the countries in Asia needed to “quickly act together, in order to maintain growth in times of global economic difficulties. And the ACD, as the only framework that brings together all sub-regional groupings of Asia, will be the key to help promote this cooperation.”

Industry Focus: Rubber Industry
With abundant natural resources and a perfect business location, Thailand stands tall as the world’s No. 1 producer and exporter of natural rubber. About 3.82 million metric tons of the material is made here annually, while a movement for added value sweeps across the local industry. A renewable resource, rubberwood is also an increasingly popular alternative to hardwood timber as environmental awareness takes root in society.

The 2nd workshop on “Entering ASEAN Community (AC) in 2015” was presided over by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at Government House, and a report on readiness in products and services was presented by, Mr. Akhom Termpittayapaisith, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

Thailand : A Supply of “Tailor Made” Skilled People for Investors
The recent meeting of BOI’s overseas offices on the current labor situation in Thailand, welcomed panelists from three government agencies: Department of Employment, Department of Skill Development, and the Office of Vocational Education Commission. These representatives provided updated information on the labor situation in Thailand, as well as strategies to handle any labor shortages in response to the forthcoming ASEAN Economic Community.

Ease of Doing Business
Ease of Doing Business marks its 10 year anniversary with the release of Doing Business 2013: Smarter Regulations for Small and Medium-Size Enterprises on 23 October 2012. In this most recent report, the World Bank, together with the International Finance Corporation, give Thailand another consecutive year among the top-20 easiest places in the world to do business, with a rank of 18. This places Thailand 6th among East Asia countries and 3rd within ASEAN.

Business Opportunities : Machinery, Tools and Dies
Thailand’s machinery and metalworking industry is home to about 50,000 enterprises and 400,000 workers, with demand growing for more sophisticated products. This creates attractive opportunities for investors since the local industry offers a limited supply of high-end machinery and parts. In fact, machinery and parts rank among Thailand’s top 5 most imported goods, with their inbound shipments totaling US$19.84 billion in 2011. Japan is the primary source of these products, representing about 24.6% of such imports, followed by China at 21.3% and the United States at 9.4%. The leading products include air or vacuum pumps and air or gas compressors and fans, with US$1.50 billion in imports.

New Cabinet Expected to Boost Efficiency of Government
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has instituted a sweeping reshuffle of the Thai Cabinet, with the aim of smoothing out policy implementation and boosting the overall efficiency of state administration. On 28 October, His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej issued a royal command to endorse the members appointed to the new Cabinet. This is the third reshuffle since Yingluck was sworn into office about 16 months ago.
