Thailand's Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) Industry
Thailand’s hard disk drives (HDDs) industry has bounced back from last year’s flooding and remains a world leader in production. Dubbed the Silicon Valley of the Far East, Thailand accounts for about 40% of global HDD production, exporting more than US$12 billion worth annually. With nearly every aspect of modern life relying on digital data, demand for data storage devices such as hard drives will soar in coming years, heightening Thailand’s importance as a top production base.

Index of Economic Freedom 2012
In its annual Index of Economic Freedom the Heritage Foundation, together with the Wall Street Journal, gives Thailand an overall score of 64.9 in its Index of Economic Freedom 2012, which is a 2 point improvement on the score awarded the previous year. The Index, which covers 184 countries, is an average of the scores given for 10 freedoms identified by the foundation: labor freedom, business freedom, trade freedom, fiscal freedom, government spending, monetary freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, property rights and freedom from corruption.

BOI Meets with Honorary Investment Advisors
On 16 January 2012, the Board of Investment organized the fi rst General Meeting of Honorary Investment Advisors (HIA). Dr. Supachai Panichapakdi, Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on trade and Development (UNCTAD) chaired the meeting, which attracted 16 HIAs from Japan, the United States, India and the countries of the European Union.

Thailand Bids for World Expo 2020
Thailand’s Public Relations Department informs that the kingdom’s bid to Host World Expo 2020 has been placed on the national agenda, saying that the decision was made by the Cabinet, during its meeting on 7 February 2012, when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was assigned to serve as the core agency in the campaign for hosting the World Expo 2020.

Flood Prevention Measures Underway
During the prime minister’s recent tour of provinces at risk for flooding, a number of urgent projects were proposed to be undertaken this year under the government’s fl ood prevention measures. With regard to upstream measures, referring to 10 provinces in the north of Thailand, the projects will include reforestation of 330,000 rai within three months and increasing the capacity of the Bhumibol and Sirikit dams by 5 billion cubic meters. Additional projects proposed include improving the warning systems through use of closed circuit television in water fl ow areas as well as use of other media.
