Thailand Elects First Female Prime Minister
Democracy has once again been affirmed in Thailand, with the election on 3 July 2011 of the country’s 28th and first female Prime Minister, Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra. Upon receiving the news that she had been officially endorsed to lead the nation, Prime Minister Yingluck remarked that “I will not work for any particular group, but for the country and for all Thai people.”

Industry Focus: Green Industries Movement
A green awareness movement is spreading to all corners of Thai society, with much encouragement by government and business. From electronics to automotive to agri-business, suppliers are making products and manufacturing techniques more ecologically safe, committing to a Thai green culture. Communities are also improving waste collection and disposal methods.

Thai Economy Continues Growth
The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) of Thailand has released it Economic Outlook for 2011 and the Economic Performance data for the second quarter of the year. The economy continued growing in Q2 by 2.6, despite facing some headwinds from the situation in Japan. Nevertheless, the outlook for the full year remains at positive growth in the range of 3.5 to 4 percent, with 2011 exports expected to expand by 16.5 percent, and consumption and private investment by 3.3 and 8.7 percent, respectively. The current account surplus for the year is forecast to be about 2.4 percent of GDP.

Spotlight on BOI Fair 2011
BOI brings the “Low Carbon Fair” concept into the design and construction of BOI Fair 2011 by using solar energy supported by Renewable Power Asia & Sun Edison MEMC Co., Ltd. The company will build solar trees/sunflowers as light poles along the pathway to generate the electricity used within the BOI office’s area. Kemrex Co., Ltd. will design and build the BOI Organizer’s office, a combination of steel structure and renewable materials, with the solar cells on the roof, as well as a wind turbine for electrical generation.

Industrial Change in the Bangkok Urban Region
Thailand’s Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) and the East Asia Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Unit of the World Bank have collaborated on a study of the Bangkok urban region, entitled Industrial Change in the Bangkok Urban Region. The study aims to “examine the dynamics of industrial change in the Bangkok urban region, to highlight problems, and to indicate how the region could both enlarge as well as fully harness its industrial potential.”
